Hi there, Melissa from The Sweet Escape with a colorful spring/summer DIY project to cheer up your space. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love fresh flowers (who doesn’t?!) but unfortunately they can’t last forever. An alternative, if you enjoy getting crafty, is beautiful crepe paper flowers. Today I’m going to show you how you can make these paper blooms and how to create this simple, modern wreath. So stock up on some wine and plan a crafternoon solo or with your best gal pal.

I referred to the fabulous book Paper to Petal for inspiration and instructions. If you enjoy making these, I highly recommend getting a copy of the book as it’s filled with dozens of flower designs plus it’s just eye candy to look at.

What you’ll need for this project:

• metal or plastic ring for wreath
• crepe paper in various colors
• florist wire
• florist tape
• scissors

If you can find 2-tone double sided crepe paper, which is what I used, you will have even more great colors. I couldn’t find a metal ring (but I know they exist) so I just took a children’s hoola hoop and spray painted it gold.

So this is the part where you pour yourself a glass of wine, Kendall-Jackson’s Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay is my fav, and get your craft on. Start by cutting out the above shapes. Don’t stress too much if they’re not perfect. If you get the Paper to Petals book they have stencils you can copy.

Start by making the center of the flower either with a small ball of paper or fringed paper. Once you have the center you just start carefully wrapping the petals around the middle using the florist tape. For the leaves, wrap them tight around the wire at the base on their own or include on the outside of your flower. It may take one flower to get the hang of it but once you get going you won’t want to stop. I actually found it really relaxing. Eventually you’ll end up with a collection similar to this:

As I mentioned, you don’t have to be perfect because the colors and shapes are so beautiful that they’ll look great no matter what.

Next you carefully wrap your blooms around the ring. Less is more with these blooms, just a few grouped together keep it looking simple and modern.
