Love heading to the farmer’s market? Looking for a fun way to showcase your fruits and vegetables, while saving counter space? Try building this DIY two-tier produce stand to give all your fruits and vegetables a functional, stylish home right in your kitchen.

I look forward to the weekends where I can grab my tote bags, fedora and head to our local farmers’ markets. We’re spoiled here in California, with opportunities to grab fresh produce year-round and it’s my favorite way to stock up the kitchen each week for fresh, delicious recipes. To free up some counter space and create a more functional area to hold my assortment of fruits and vegetables, I created this DIY two-tier wood produce stand. It sits right on the side of my kitchen island, making it easy to grab a sweet potato, onion, tomato or avocado.

Now it goes without saying (but I’ll say it anyways) that you should not be enjoying any wine or adult beverages before or during the building or assembling of this stand and please always use the proper technique and safety equipment whenever you’re working with a saw or any heavy machinery. Let’s save the wine for a celebratory toast after we complete this fun DIY. With that said, let’s get started!

How to Make a DIY Two-Tier Wood Produce Stand

Materials:

  • (2) Wood Crates
  • 1” x 4” x 8’ wood board
  • 2” x 4” x 8’ wood board
  • (4) #8 x 2” wood screws
  • (8) #8 x 1.5” wood screws
  • Wood Stain

Instructions:

  1. Using the 1 x 4 x 8 piece of wood, cut 2 - 34” boards.
  2. On one end, cut the top of each board at an angle of 30°.

These pieces will be used as the sides of the produce stand.

3. Using the 2 x 4 x 8 piece of wood, cut 2 - 10” boards.
4. Trim both ends at a 45° angle with a miter saw.

These pieces will be used as the base of the produce stand. Use a hand sander to smooth down all rough sides.

5. Assemble the base of the produce stand. The angled pieces of 2 x 4 boards will rest on the inside of the 34” boards at the base. Using 2 of the 2” wood screws, attach the 34” board at the base to the angled pieces of wood (make sure the angled side of the 34” board is at the top). Do this for both sides.
6. Apply 1-2 coats of wood stain to the wood crates and stands. Let dry completely.
7. Once dry, assemble the produce stand. Start with the crate that will be at the top of the stand. Line up the top of the crate with the top of the angled piece of wood. Lay on it’s side and attach with 2 - 1.5” wood screws.
8. Before attaching the other leg, you need to adhere the second crate to the stand. Position at the base and measure the angle to ensure it matches with the top crate. Again, attach with 2 more of the 1.5” wood screws.
9. Flip the stand over and attach the second leg. Use 2 of the 1.5” wood screws for each of the crates.
10. Turn the stand upright and you’re done! Line each crate with a layer of burlap to prevent the produce from coming in direct contact with the wood stain.

Here’s the best part about this DIY two-tier produce stand, it’s actually quite easy to make and you don’t have to be a craftsman to build it! Access to a miter saw and a power drill and you’re good to go. You could always make nice with your local hardware store and see if they’ll cut the pieces of wood too. You’ll save lots of time by grabbing a few pre-made wood crates, plus their ample size gives you plenty of room to store all your produce. I was able to build this stand in less than two hours leaving me plenty of time to kick back with a chilled glass of Kendall-Jackson Vintner’s Reserve Sauvignon Blanc and marvel at my DIY skills — the twist off screw cap and crisp summer flavors make it the perfect summer wine to celebrate with. There’s an extra boost of satisfaction when you build something yourself and see it get put to good use!
